A Holiday Getaway from
Outdoors Maryland on Maryland Public Television

OWINGS MILLS, MD: For those who can't skip the holiday madness, December's editions of Outdoors Maryland gets you out of the mall and into the air without leaving the comfort of your easy chair. From sandy slopes of Assateague Island to the majestic mountains of Rocky Gap State Park, Outdoors Maryland delivers a vast and extensive array of eye-pleasing visuals and noteworthy knowledge.

On Saturday, December 8 at 5:30 p.m., Outdoors Maryland features three segments. "Osprey Heaven" explores a breed of birds so in abundance on the Chesapeake Bay that they're being shipped to other areas of the country where the species is in decline. "Mettle to the Pedal" joins the fun with a Cycle Across Maryland tour. And "Fishin' the Gap" treks to Rocky Gap State Park for the DNR's annual fishing derby where kids are fishing, some for the first time.

The Saturday December 15 program, airing at 5:30 p.m. and repeating on Sunday, December 16 at 7:30 p.m. dedicates the full half-hour program to a stunning profile of Assateague Island. "Nature's Way" tours the island, explores the history, observes present threats to its existence, and examines what is being done to save the barrier island.

On the trail, under the sea, and out on the lake, the Saturday, December 22, 5:30 p.m. edition of Outdoors Maryland takes viewers far from the bustling crowds of local malls. The first episode, "Spring to Katadhin" explores the Appalachian Trail with two experienced "A.T.ers" on this longest, regularly maintained footpath in the world. "Green Obscurity" delves deep into the world of undersea grasses to reveal why they are vital, why they are vanishing, and what's being done to rejuvenate them. The final episode, "Catch of the Day," heads for the hills of Garrett County where Deep Creek Lake offers some of the best fishing in Western Maryland. Outdoors Maryland joins two fishing guides as they try their luck on the lake going for trout bass, pike, and walleye.

Outdoors Maryland is brought to viewers as a result of the successful collaboration
between Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Public Television. Michael English is producer.
